I'm curious to hear how the recession is affecting you? Have you had to change any habits? Cut out any regular purchases? What creative ways are you managing to get by during tougher economic times?
Hey, I'm just glad gas prices are finally back down under 3 bucks a gallon here!:-) Not exactly the answer you were looking for but I'm starting to practice for my future political career....you know, answer questions by NOT actually *answering* the questions. How'm I doing?:-P
Well, this is hitting us hard. Being a single parent family with only one income, it was hard before but now, Holy Cow!!!
I used to take the kids out one night a week for bowling and a pizza but, we no longer do this due to the rising costs and income not rising :(
I have cut back on things food shopping wise also like my beloved SODA not a need so, not in the home anymore. I have also cut back on snacks for the kids and meats like steak. Not enough money to afford all those things anymore.
I have gone more towards second hand shops for clothes for the family. Especially the kids with them growing in leaps and bounds, we buy used and then offer them up here when we are done with them :)
Creative ways to save money that I have implemented in the past few months are:
1. Clip lots of coupons and watch for when they double the value at different stores.
2. Compare sale ads weekly and find the best deals...walmart matches their competitor coupons and this also saves money may not save time but hey, I would rather have a few more dollars and few less minutes :)
3. I found an awesome site that I am going to be ordering food from. It is church distributed, resturant quality meats and great deals!!! You buy the main box for $30.00 and then they have "monthly specials" which are meat packages for $18.00 to $20.00 depending on what they are offering.
the site is called www.angelfoodministries.com or maybe it is .ORG
Check it out! There are a few here local in Columbus and I am sure they are in just about every state.
If they are NOT in your state...contact your local church and let them know of the program and they can be added as a host site.
Well, this is it for now. Give that site a try, I promise if you order, you will not be disappointed with their items :)
is an awesome organization which started small and is now in almost all states. They are easy to work with AND they accept the EBT Food Stamp Card for those who get Food Stamps. They are offering a Thanksgiving Meal right now complete with all you will need for one price!
I have ordered from them 3 or 4 times now and each time, I have been pleased. Now, you do not get to pick and choose what is in your box, it is set each month BUT whatever you do not like/want/use you can always pass on to a friend or neighbor.
I am glad to share it with you guys. It has been a blessing to my family and I and hope it can be helpful to some others who are finding that their dollar is worth 50 cents like mine is! LOL
You can also order online for another person...say your neighbor is a single parent and struggles, you could go on their site and order and pay for a box with as many specials as you wish for them.
You can also donate a box to the church like buy a box and tell them to donate it to a family in need.
Wow thank you so much for sharing that site. I just checked it out and it sounds really nice. I am gonna order from the Nov. one and let everyone know how it is! Tahnks again, Teresa
We have had to cut out many things. Chris has been very sick lately. He was hospitalized for a pancreatic (is that the correct spelling? lol) attack. He was on a Chemo treatment for the Crohns which has made him very ill. He just does not seem to be getting any better. He has had so many test here lately and one test revealed 36 ulcers and the Doctor said that number is just what the camera caught. He said Chris has one of the worst cases he has seen. We have been praying so much for him to at least feel better. So with him missing work so much and all the prescription cost we have made many changes in our lifestyle.
I have always been a coupon clipper but now I surf the web for coupons and don't leave home without my coupon book. We almost NEVER eat out anymore. I have been trying to work more hours to make up for the lost income so I will prepare a few meals at one time and crock pot as much as I can. We only drive when necessary. We have told our children that there will be no Winter sports. They are usually involved all year long so this one they didn't like but I'm sure they will enjoy the much needed break and I know we will as well. We have made changes to many of our plans such as phone and cable and internet. I shop on double coupon day and I have been a frequent flyer at Aldi which I must say I now love this store. I have not renewed any magazine subscriptions and have made my children save their money for anything and everything they want. They learned very quickly the difference between and "want" and a "need" which is a very good lesson for anyone. We have always been able to help others during the holiday season but this year I don't think we will be able to and that is what I think bothers Chris the most. He has such a giving heart and would give the shirt off his back. I just hope and pray that his treatment will help him to feel better and not be so depressed because of what he has not been able to do. He's such a great guy and anyone that knows him would know how giving he is. Please keep him in your prayers. Happy Holidays to everyone.
OMGosh! I'm sorry to hear about how sick Chris is. 36 ulcers?! I didn't even know that was possible all at one time! Is that in his intestines because of the chrones? I'll keep him - and all of you - in prayer.
Wow Connie I have been wondering where you have been. I am so sorry,if you need me for anything please call. I will be praying for Chris and the whole family, Love Teresa
Yes, 36 ulcers. They are all in his digestional (s?) track. He has been so sick. Thanks Teresa, I have been wondering how PA was. We are gonna have to get together. Right now, I am working quite a bit but when things settle down I'll have to have you over for some chatty time. Thanks for the prayers ladies, Believe me - They are much appreciated. I'll keep you posted.
This whole year has quite a ride for me and my family. I don't like to get on the pity wagon too much, but I'm just amazed at how hard it has been trying to find a job! This is frustrating me beyond all things! I have worked since I was in high school and never had trouble finding a job. I've applied for so many jobs, jobs that I never would have before and nothing. I spent 4 years getting a Master's Degree to further my career and bring in more income and I've been unemployed all year! Ugh! My mother unexpectedly took ill the beginning of the year and she took care of everything in her house, including my dad. So I ended up taking care of things. She passed away in August and my poor Dad was just blind sided. I can't pay my mortgage (oh BTW I have one of those bad loans - got it when I was a student) and I've been waiting to see whether my daughter and I have to move. Good lessons I'm learning. So, yeah, hasn't been the greatest year. But, I am determined to get through and look for the positives every day. Like my dog Wesley, the little things that happen or people do, and web sites like this that remind of the good in the world. Oh yeah! And the end of the Bush administration! That was a GREAT GREAT boost in my belief in the universe. Sorry if I offended any Bush supporters. So, I ended up going and on as I didn't want to. But it's nice to be able to vent every now and then. I will be telling everyone I know about this site and will start looking around for things to give away. I wish I'd known about this site sooner. We need more people in California on this site. Come on guys!!!
I'm sorry to hear about your mother. I know first hand - as many of us do - what it's like to lose a parent. I hope things to out well for your family.
"And the end of the Bush administration!"
Well, unfortunately, we're looking at socialism for at *least* the next four years. No, I'm not name calling - I just call a spade a spade. And, No, I belong to neither party. I just want our Republic back in full the way our founding fathers intended.
It really hasnt changed much for my family. We havent ever really lived large. We dont even have charge cards If we can pay for it, we dont buy it. I cut them up 12 years ago. We are very simple people, we would rather have friends and family over, instead of going out. I love to cook, soo going out to eat isnt something we do alot.I am pretty frugal. Our teenager goes to the movies about once a month with his friends. We sometimes rent from 99cent movies at Block Busters, but we have always lived like this. I havent even worked since closing my Resturant about or around 3 maybe 4 years ago. FUNNY I cant remember, maybe thats why I think it hasnt really affected us. LOL-- We have never been people that are impressed with contract cell phones or new cars or bigger houses ETC., we use a prepaid only when we need one(like maybe on trips) We dont care about driving a new car. We owe 2 car payments on the car we have. And we have one older car thats like 14 years old. I cant say anything has really changed for us. Not because we have money, just because we are just are not into alot of Material things anyway. It may change we will see, but for now we are making it!
Hey, I'm just glad gas
