I've been using Columbus Recreation centers for my kids for years. We do so many sports, arts, music, theater, etc. classes that it is too numerous to list here. Most of these classes over the years have been free or REALLY cheap. But one thing most people don't know about is the P.L.A.Y. grant. I've been using these grants for my own kids for years and it simply amazes me that more people don't know about them!
P.L.A.Y. grants will pay for $20 towards one activity per session per child under 18 from a mid to low income family. For instance, if you take a piano class that is $20 for one session (around 7 weeks), and you turn in a P.L.A.Y. grant with proof of income when you register, that class is FREE. Proof of income can be a Medicaid card, Caresource card, or your most recent tax return. Just ask the center director for an application or for more information on qualifications.
Sometimes, by being able to take one class for free, it has made it so I could financially afford another class my children wanted, too. In any case, the classes and activities with Columbus Recreation centers are the least expensive- BY FAR- that I've ever seen, even if we do end up paying a fee.
And there are some really COOL homeschool classes we are going to do this year! The best homeschool line-up I've seen is on Tuesday afternoons at Dodge Rec Center. They have FREE sign language classes, as well as art, cooking, and a homeschool gym time- all free. We are also planning to try the homeschool floor hockey on Thursday afternoons at Tuttle Rec Center and Conversational Spanish on Fridays at Far East Rec Center. I don't think any of these classes, except homeschool hockey and homeschool gym, are limited to just homeschoolers. People come on their lunch hour to do the free sign language class!
The rec centers are all in the process of publishing their fall schedule and will have them up on their website very soon:

If you are only interested in music lessons at Columbus Rec Centers, that list is already out- email:

If you know of a family who could really use this information and/or the P.L.A.Y. grant, would you mind sharing it with them? It's a shame more people don't know about this wonderful opportunity! Hope to see you soon at the rec center!
