You probably already know that our February challenge is to see who can successfully invite the most new members at Twoshirts.org using the "Invite your friends" feature of your profile menu. Well today is the day we announce the prize for the winner...
(Drum roll please)
The member with the most successful invites by 11:59PM on February 29th (leap year day!) will win a $50 gift card for Starbucks! This is just our small way of showing appreciation for spreading the word about Twoshirts.org.
Of course, we think Twoshirts is cool enough that you should invite all your friends whether there's a prize or not - but more coffee never hurts (in my humble opinion)!
Keep an eye on the standings to the right: at this very moment Briabn Stephenson has a commanding lead with 20 successful invites, but gregknake and DoctorBravo are catching up with 10 and 7 respectively.
We're only half way through the month, so don't give up! There's still plenty of time for anyone out there to win this months challenge. Invite all your friends, neighbors, and co-workers via e-mail and let's make Twoshirts.org a true community effort to spread generosity in our city!
(One more thing: 1000 bonus points to the person who can be the first to tell us who the figure in the Starbucks logo is and what the inspiration for this logo was.)

Begin Quote:
The logo is a "twin-tailed siren" (the siren of Greek mythology).[27] The logo has been streamlined over the years. In the first version, the Starbucks siren was topless and had a fully-visible double fish tail. In the second version, her chest was covered by her flowing hair, but her navel was still visible, and the fish tail was cropped slightly. In the current version, her navel and chest are not visible at all, and only vestiges remain of the fish tails. The original logo can still be seen on the Starbucks store in Seattle's Pike Place Market and on certain coffee bags.
At the beginning of September 2006, Starbucks temporarily reintroduced its original brown logo on paper hot drink cups. Starbucks has stated that this was done to show the company's heritage from the Pacific Northwest and to celebrate 35 years of business. The vintage logo has sparked some controversy due to the siren's bare chest. Recently, an elementary school principal in Kent, Washington, was reported as asking teachers to "cover up" the mermaid of the retro cups with a cup sleeve of some kind.[27]

ok i didnt give the whole history, but seems you did your homework, maybe i should have looked it up. WAS i even close?? should have known you would know SHOW OFF LOL just kidding! And you are doing a terrific job-you go !! But watch your back as we all know anything at the last minute can happen. But it wont be me this time. I am only giving out Business Cards and telling everyone about the site. Cant wait to meet you! Good Luck. Teresa
Good job norret and brian
Good job norret on being the first to correctly identify the girl as a siren, and good job brian for mentioning the twin tail and the original topless (I would say classical) figure.
But there's more to the story that isn't in Wikipedia...can anyone correctly tell us how the Starbucks logo went from brown (which Brian mentioned) to the current green?

"Terry [Heckler] also poured over old marine books until he came up with a logo based on an old sixteenth-century Norse woodcut: a two-tailed mermaid, or siren, encircled by the store’s original name, Starbucks Coffee, Tea, and Spice. That early siren, bare-breasted and Rubenesque, was supposed to be as seductive as coffee itself."
"Our logo reflected the emphasis on speed. The Il Giornale name was inscribed in a green circle that surrounded a head of Mercury, the swift messenger god."
"To symbolize the melding of the two companies [Il Giornarle and Starbucks] and two cultures, Terry [Heckler] came up with a design that merged the two logos. We kept the Starbucks siren with her starred crown, but made her more contemporary. We dropped the tradition-bound brown, and changed the logo’s color to Il Giornarle’s more affirming green."
"In 1992 we also asked Terry Heckler to revise our logo: She stayed mostly the same but lost her navel."
You got it!
You got it! 500 more bonus points for you Brian. : )
